Star Wars Galaxies - Faction Ranking System
last updated 4.2.2005
The two major factions in the game, Star Wars Galaxies, Imperial and Rebel Alliance have a ranking system. The ranks are earned by gaining faction points. If you have over 200 faction points for either faction, you may join that faction.
Q: How do I join one of the factions?
A: In order to do this, you must talk with a non-player character (NPC) in the game. If you move your mouse over the NPC character and your cursor changes to a green triangle, you may converse with that character. Use the onscreen menus to choose what to say. You will need to select something like "I'm interested in joining your faction".
Q: What are the benefits of gaining faction ranks?
A: You are able to give faction points to someone else at a higher ratio. At the rank of Private, if you want to give someone 100 faction points, it will cost you 650 faction points to do so. Faction points are given to a player by typing: /delegate x You must be special forces in that faction and you must have that character targeted (as far as I know--you may need to be grouped). It is believed that if you are a rebel, the higher faction rank you have, the less likely you will be discovered by Imperial searches.
Q: Can I use my faction points (FP) for something other than gaining rank?
A: Yes. You can use your FP to buy items, schematics, structures, or experience points. When you talk with a NPC of that faction he/she will tell you what you can buy or purchase and it will show how many FP are required for that item.
Note: The bases of each faction are purchased with faction points. The larger the base, the higher the FP cost.
Q: What are the rankings and how many points does it take to get them, etc.
A: Here is a chart of all of that information (thanks to Kemble with his MB post at the SWG Official Message Board. I had to change some of the information in it as I'm going through the ranks.

It should be noted that the minimum faction standing is 200 points. You will no longer get the "have I qualified for a promotion option when talking to a faction-friendly NPC. You will see an option to get a promotion when you have the required amount of faction points.
The highest attainable rank for players to date is Colonel. We may have to wait to see if any of us are allowed to become Generals.
For those of you about to see how many FP is required to make Colonel, it is 51,000. Happy grinding!
